Neither sales volumes nor bank account balances are, by themselves, any measure of the health of a business or the direction it is headed.  Many variables such as cost of goods sold, overhead expenses and changes in receivables and payables are necessary components of performance evaluation.  If you don't have a firm grasp of all these financial components, you run the very real risk of being mislead by incomplete information.  Quarterly financial statements, at a minimum, are highly recommended.
